GST/HST – AIRBNB

If you are operating an Airbnb, chances are you will need to charge GST/HST on the service you provide. There are only two (2) reasons why a leasing of a unit is exempt from GST/HST

  1. The unit is rented for longer than one month continuously by the same individual
  2. The daily occupancy fee does not exceed $20

Airbnb’ are considered to be short term stays than normally do not exceed one month, therefore are not exempt. Unless the owner has less than $30,000 in revenue than he/she will require to register for a GST/HST account and start charging for GST/HST. This would classify the owner as a “small supplier”,
